Billy Turner interview on the Jack and Ron show in Oklahoma City
On a warm Friday evening in June 2013, Billy Turner was driving home from his trucking company in Weatherford, Oklahoma, when he encountered a devastating scene on Interstate 40. A crumpled Jeep was encircled by emergency responders. A tractor-trailer heading west had lost a set of dual tires from its rear trailer axle. The wheels tragically vaulted over the median and smashed into the windshield of the eastbound Jeep carrying four teenagers from Texas. Two of the teens suffered fatal head injuries, while the other two, who were brothers, were severely injured, one critically. The parents of the injured teens, traveling ahead, witnessed the horrifying accident in their rear-view mirror and then endured an agonizing wait as the fire department worked for 90 minutes to extricate the teens trapped within the wreckage.
"It was simply the most horrific thing anyone could ever imagine experiencing," said Turner, who was deeply affected by the tragedy.
Back then, Billy's trucking company had a fleet of around 20 tractor-trailers. Incidents like this one made him meticulous about trailer maintenance. He was determined to prevent his equipment from causing any harm. Just a short while later, one of his trucks returned to the yard missing a set of trailer tires – the driver was completely unaware.
Then in a chillingly similar incident, his daughter Nikki faced the same fate as the boys in the jeep, less than 5 miles from the tragic wreck Turner had witnessed. A set of wheels detached from a semi-trailer, hurtling across the median at over 70 mph directly towards the front of her car. She narrowly escaped by swerving off the road, a split-second decision that saved her life. Hearing of this close call solidified his resolve: he could not let these tragedies continue.
Soon after he dedicated himself to creating a device that could prevent such wheel-off accidents from ever happening again.
